Last night was project night in the Stephenson house. After five years of staring at an ugly, chipped sink it was time to go. Moreover, Home Depot finally had a good sale on kitchen sinks making the decision to replace the old one that much easier.
This was my first ever attempt at replacing the kitchen sink. Not knowing what I was totally getting into it was nice to have my father-in-law over for dinner to help coach me through the project at hand. As you can imagine with any project, it didn’t go the way I had planned. However, after three trips to the Depot and more money leaving my account I finally got the old sink out and the new one in. And the miracle of it all is that it worked…I mean the hot water came out of the hot setting and the cold came out of the cold setting, the garbage disposer worked, and water wasn’t all over my kitchen. What a victory for the Stephenson household.
The funny thing was that we had a blast as well. By no means did I have fun cramming myself under the sink trying to get everything hooked up. The fun came from spending time with my son and watching the joy on his face as he helped his dad finish a project. And I must say, Aaron was the best help a two year old could offer. In the end, we laughed, we cried, we got inpatient, we got in each other’s way, hit our heads, and got nasty water all over ourselves. Most importantly, we learned a lot!
I think I learned more in watching my son than anything else. He loved being right in the middle of all that I was doing. At times, if I am honest he really wasn’t much help and even got in the way. But he wanted to be doing what I was doing and that I loved. I cherish moments like these because I know that I won’t always have them. Someday Aaron will leave home and begin a family of his own. But until that day, I look forward to a lot more home projects.
I am amazed at all the things God uses my son to teach me. This week God has used Aaron to remind me how good and joyful it is to be about my Father’s business. I believe God is overjoyed when we make our business about his business. And I imagine we even get in the way, but I am convinced that is the way that God likes it. Do you find joy in helping your Father with his projects, making his business your business? If you haven’t tried it this week…give it a go!
