Old thought for a New Time

by Lee on October 29th, 2009

Over the past two weeks I have been making my way through a classic of the Christian faith. It is a book written by G.K. Chesterton called Orthodoxy. It is written as a foundations of the faith, a study guide to Christian thought. The book was written around 100 years ago and has some great insight. One particular paragraph really stuck me this past week as I made my way through it. As I read it, it sounded as though he was describing our current culture. Take a look at it and let me know your thoughts.

pg. 21: “What we suffer from today is humility in the wrong place. Modesty has moved from the organ of ambition. Modesty has settled upon the organ of conviction; where it was never meant to be. A man was meant to be doubtful about himself, but undoubting about the truth; this has been exactly reversed. Nowadays the part of a man that man does assert is exactly the part he ought not to assert himself. The part he doubts is exactly the part he out not to doubt – The Divine Reason.”

Including the Kitchen sink

by Lee on October 27th, 2009

Last night was project night in the Stephenson house. After five years of staring at an ugly, chipped sink it was time to go. Moreover, Home Depot finally had a good sale on kitchen sinks making the decision to replace the old one that much easier.

This was my first ever attempt at replacing the kitchen sink. Not knowing what I was totally getting into it was nice to have my father-in-law over for dinner to help coach me through the project at hand. As you can imagine with any project, it didn’t go the way I had planned. However, after three trips to the Depot and more money leaving my account I finally got the old sink out and the new one in. And the miracle of it all is that it worked…I mean the hot water came out of the hot setting and the cold came out of the cold setting, the garbage disposer worked, and water wasn’t all over my kitchen. What a victory for the Stephenson household.

The funny thing was that we had a blast as well. By no means did I have fun cramming myself under the sink trying to get everything hooked up. The fun came from spending time with my son and watching the joy on his face as he helped his dad finish a project. And I must say, Aaron was the best help a two year old could offer. In the end, we laughed, we cried, we got inpatient, we got in each other’s way, hit our heads, and got nasty water all over ourselves. Most importantly, we learned a lot!

I think I learned more in watching my son than anything else. He loved being right in the middle of all that I was doing. At times, if I am honest he really wasn’t much help and even got in the way. But he wanted to be doing what I was doing and that I loved. I cherish moments like these because I know that I won’t always have them. Someday Aaron will leave home and begin a family of his own. But until that day, I look forward to a lot more home projects.

I am amazed at all the things God uses my son to teach me. This week God has used Aaron to remind me how good and joyful it is to be about my Father’s business. I believe God is overjoyed when we make our business about his business. And I imagine we even get in the way, but I am convinced that is the way that God likes it. Do you find joy in helping your Father with his projects, making his business your business? If you haven’t tried it this week…give it a go!

Monday Morning Musings

by Lee on October 26th, 2009

- Had a great time yesterday in both services! Band rocked it in learning a few new songs to help in the mornings impact. And if you didn’t know they had to get two last minute replacements at drums and bass!

- Loved Micah’s announcements this week. Great way to plug “One Month to Live.”

- A lot of people were sick this weekend. Praying for all of you to get well soon! Stay away from the swine flu.

- Excited for the start of our new series this weekend…”One Month to Live.”

- Please pray as we have a mailer going out this week to the community promoting the One Month to Live series. (22,000 homes will be getting the mailer this week)

- Lots of people have signed up for a Life Group. Praise God!

- A big thank you to everyone who stepped up Sunday to help us clear out everything, following the service. Awesome to see people tripping over others because so many people came down to help! Keep up the good work team.

- Still wanting to get a Harvest softball team together. Let me know if you would be interested in helping us get things off the ground.

- Looking forward to being able to wear a sweatshirt later this week.

- Putting in a new kitchen sink tonight. Pray that everything works when I get done.

- Have a blessed week. If you think about it…let us know what God is doing in your life.

To be brave

by Lee on October 20th, 2009

Humility and Courage. At first glance these traits can appear to be opposites. Yet, as I have read through Philippians 2 today I have been struck by the amount of courage it takes to be humble. Let me try to explain.

Humility seems to be a necessary foundation of walking deeply with God. Humility, and I mean true humility, comes from seeking the interests of God before your own. As we mature in our personal walk with God, humility is demonstrated by no longer living for yourself but rather, allowing Jesus to live in and through you. To let go of yourself in this manner must require courage. A humble person understands what it means to be content in the Lord, for life isn’t about them. Life has become about Jesus. To live humbly before God is safe, and yet requires much courage.
